I used to have perfect handwriting. I could change it every day depending on my mood, and it was always beautiful. After my first surgery, I couldn’t write the way I used to anymore: my hand was slow, my lines uneven, and every attempt ended with a hurting hand and a frustrated me. So I stopped writing, even though I had always loved it.

I made this painting now, after all these years of not writing, because I’m starting to make peace with my handwriting. It may never look the same, but I’m realizing it doesn’t look that bad either, and I’m able to spend more and more time writing each day I try.

“Handwriting” is an ode to my handwriting — and to myself, really. It’s a reminder that nothing is lost as long as I keep fighting for it, and that beauty changes depending on the eyes and the mood of the observer.
